Ultraceuticals: Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30+ Review.

The Front
List of Active Ingredients.

So I was chosen by the good people of Active Skin to be among those selected to review this product from Ultraceuticals range of suncare protection creams.

Product: Ultraceuticals- Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30+ (Untinted)
Product Type: Sun Care.
Skin Type: All Skin Types

Functions to:
* protect skin from Ultraviolet (UV) rays that damage and age the skin.
* Containing both chemical and physical screening properties
* Specific ingredients to protect against daily environmental damage.

Ingredients include:
* Oxybenzone 3.0% w/w,
* Octyl Methoxycinnamate 7.5% w/w,
* Zinc Oxide 4.9% w/w,
* Phenoxyethanol,
* Sorbic Acid, Oat Kernel Flour,
* Tocopheryl Acetate,
* Tocopherol,
* Camellia Sinesis Leaf Extract,
* Lactic Acid

My Reviews:
I have trialled this product over a period of 10 days now.

When I first received the product, I was assuming that it would be a typical face moisturiser. However, the thick cream consistency would mean to say that it would have the "sun cream" feel and consistency due to the number of active ingredients present in the product.

It does not seem to have any fragrance (fragrance free) which is good for those who have a sensitivity to fragrances.

I have used this product over my toner, and before application of my normal BB Cream, which so far has not posed much of a problem for me.

Dermalogica: Soothing Protection Spray Review

More than half trialled of the sample size.
List of ingredients on the back.
Solution on a cotton pad.
So I was chosen by the good people of Active Skin to be among those selected to review this product from Dermalogica's range of face care toner solutions.

Product: Soothing Protection Spray (250 ml)
Product Type: Toner.
Skin Type: Sensitive.

Functions to:
* protect skin from reactive ozone
* botanicals immediately reduce irritation, redness and inflammation.
* Shields skin from further environmental assault caused by temperature extremes, pollution, irritating cosmetic products, harsh detergents, chemical exposure, stress, poor diet or hormonal factors.

Ingredients include:
* Dermalogica's exclusive Anti-Ozonate Complex to Soothing Green Tea,
* Canadian Willow Herb,
* Cucumber,
* Licorice
* Raspberry extracts deliver potent anti-itching, healing and antioxidant properties.

My Reviews:
Toners are important as they help prep the skin prior to the application of the moisturiser, as the beauticians at the salon that I frequent for my monthly awaited facials each month. The use of toners helps the effective absorption of the moisturiser.

As my skin ranges between between dehydrated/dry/sensitive, I was sent this product for trialling purposes. I have at the time of this post, trialled this product of a duration of over 10 days which was integrated into as part of my daily cleansing face regime. (i.e., cleanser, toner, moisturiser).

The Soothing Protection Spray left my skin feeling soothed. When used effectively with a cotton pad, it helped remove the last traces of make-up before the application of the face moisturiser (and there was a lot left!). It also helped made the pores shrink and gave a calming effect.

Clarins: Gentle Night Cream Day 7 Review.

Clarins Gentle Night Cream- the front.
Instructions to use.
The spout up-close.
A squirt size of the night cream.
So I was chosen by the good people of Active Skin to be among those selected to review this product from Clarins range of moisturizing creams.

Product: Clarins Gentle Night Cream. (Sensitive Skin)

Product Description: The perfect night time complement to Gentle Day Cream to gently soothe, soften and rebalance sensitive skin. This product can be used after the routine of cleansing and toning of the face in the daily routine.

Ingredients include:
* Vegetal complex: immediately soothes irritated skin
* Noctoferrine® Clarins exclusive complex neutralizes nocturnal
free radicals
* Vitamins A, E and B5: balance, combat signs of aging
* Christophine
* Hazelnut
* Linseed

Moisture Level
As my skin ranges between dehydrated/dry/sensitive, this product was sent to me for trialling purposes.

After trialling out the product for 7 days, I find that the moisture level of the Clarins Gentle Night Cream was not too rich, but not too light for the temperate Australian Winter to Spring transition climate.

I found that the cream was fairly suitable for my skin which was dry around the cheeks, and yet not too rich in the T-zone area, which had more sebum production.

The Clarins Gentle Night Cream for Sensitive Skin would be suitable for people with dry skin, or sensitive skin. The cream is white in colour, has a creamy consistency, and it seems to be fragrance free.

That's good too as I don't like skincare with too much fragrances the older I get, and skincare with added fragrance I find, may irritate skin and some people may be averse to the strong fragrance found in some skincare products.

Amount Used
A single small squirt of the cream on my fingertips, which I warmed up before applying it lightly in light sweeping motions was adequate to cover my face, and provided enough moisture.

The cream seems to have an oil base, so it would be suitable for those who possess dry to sensitive skin, so it would not be so suitable for those who possess dehydrated type skin.

Cleaning Black Stockings

So I started a new job last week.

Part of my attire included a new pair of Denier 50, and 40 winter stockings. It was soaked in a solution of laundry powder, and warm water.

An hour later, I was surprised to see the post soak solution thoroughly a dark pasty colour.

Me: It looks really pasty.
Flatmate: How long have you used it?
Me: Only this week.
R:Then it must be the dye.
Me: Dye??? I didn't think they dyed stockings...

Trialling New Job on Monday!

So today, I went for a long awaited facial at 'Delicacy', the Sothys facial salon at Ashfield Mall.

I have a teaching/administrative position which I will be trialling out on Monday in the Eastern Hills suburbs.

Knowing the nature of my work, it will be long hours starting from 6am, when I wake up, getting on the train at 7am, starting work at 8am, and ending at 5.30pm, with another hour trekking on the Sydney train back to home.

At least that is how I predict my work schedule will be like.

It wouldn't really fare well with my skin, and basically I'll be reorientating my body clock to wake up early, as opposed to my usual late night sleeps.

Anyways, wish me all the best at my new job. Pray that I'll perform well!

How to stop your friends and family ruining your diet

Taken from here. I've copied and pasted this here, as MSN has the practice of removing its posts after a period of time.

Posted By Gaby Leslie, Tue 17 Aug, 2010 04:16PM BST

One of the biggest obstacles to any weight loss plan is getting around the many subtle and not-so-subtle ways that family and friends may use to sabotage dieting.

The journey to shedding those excess pounds can be difficult and depressing, when a dieter requires support from friends and loved ones to help them along their way.

But a sudden change in lifestyle may intimidate others and they can react in different ways. For example, they may become insecure, jealous, unsympathetic and sceptical of a quest to lose weight.

One of the biggest obstacles to any weight loss plan is getting around the many subtle and not-so-subtle ways that family and friends may use to sabotage dieting.

While they may not be aware that they are doing it, the tactics used by those closest to you could be the potential downfall of your efforts to lose weight.

Do you constantly worry about falling prey to temptation? Like when a pushy mother-in-law lays on the guilt when you refuse a second slice of her home-made cheesecake? Or a friend force-feeds a fattening dessert down your throat at a restaurant?

When your nearest and dearest pressure you into eating more, you drift between wanting to please them and not wanting to consume unnecessary calories.

So what can you do to silence food pushers?

Here are 10 handy tips for dealing with forceful food-pushers:

1) Pair your refusal of the food with a compliment. For example, say “I’d love some cheesecake, but I’m so full from the delicious chicken parmesan that I can’t eat another bite

2) Say no! If a slice of pie or a second helping of potatoes will ruin your diet, just flat out refuse it. If the person trying to serve you is offended, just remind them how much you need their support to meet your healthy lifestyle goals.

3) Be firm. Don’t succumb to peer pressure. If you've said you're not ordering dessert, stick to it. Giving into the "go on, it won't hurt" crowd will just make people think that you want to be talked into it.

4) Give away your goodies. You might have ended up with enough chocolates for your birthday to keep you on a permanent sugar high for the rest of the year. Stash any large boxes somewhere safe, and take one with you when seeing friends to share them out.

5) Don't let every social occasion revolve around food. It's great to eat together, but if that's all you and your friends do, try suggesting an active event: bowling, ice-skating, even a trip to a theme park.

6) Going out for drinks with friends? Stick to diet drinks or fresh fruit/vegetable juice without added sugar. Alcohol is very high in calories and can prevent you from making healthy food choices. Cut your calories by half by cheating with a diet gin and tonic at only 50 calories.

7) When eating out with friends, try to sit away from the bread and butter. It is really easy to keep on munching on this without even realising while chatting with your friends.

8) Do you find yourself at your mother's or grandmother's for a Sunday roast? Why not offer to bring a salad, vegetable, or healthy dessert?

9) Perhaps you could spend some extra time in the gym, go for a jog or skip a treat the next day if you feel like you have overindulged.

10) If friends and family express judgmental feelings, the first thing you should do is realise that these statements are more about their own feelings of inadequacy. Try not to take it to heart. Instead, focus on the fact that you are doing something healthy for yourself.

Marie Claire Australia: Free Estee Lauder Pure Colour Gloss.

So I was at the mall on Thursday evening (shopping night in Australia, remember?!) and bought myself a new pair of shoes.. on the way home, I headed to the news agent and lo and behold, spying from the shelf where the rest of the women's magazines was a shiny lip gloss...

Marie Claire Australia
Ordinarily, Australian ladies magazines are not much to shout about.... (they really should learn from their asian counterparts how to boost sales..)

Readers these days are more discerning than they used to be.. the only thing that could "sell" a magazine is the "goodie" that comes along with it.. and this one was the Estee Lauder one (which means "quality good brand".

 Estee Lauder Pure Colour Gloss (11- Passion Fruit Shimmer)
One of my korean mates told me she had to pay about 30,000 won for a lip gloss from Estee Lauder. So for AUD9.20 for the magazine and the Estee Lauder seems a pretty good buy.

There were a few other magazines offering lip gloss "goodies" but this was the only one that actually caught my attention anyways!

LUSH: Aromaco Deodorant *Mmmmm* Smells good. ^^

Ingredients:
Witchazel Infusion (Hamamelis virginiana), Propylene Glycol, Sodium Stearate, Chamomile Vinegar (Anthemis nobilis), Sodium Bicarbonate, Patchouli Oil (Pogostemon cablin), Perfume.
100g

Description:
Aromaco is our cooling, patchouli scented deodorant block based on an infusion of astringent witch hazel and chamomile vinegar. This has pong-bashing bicarb in it too. Use it on your feet, your armpits and anywhere else you want to keep smelling fresh and lovely. We add plenty of patchouli oil, which is cooling on the skin, is rumoured to sharpen the wits and acts as an insect repellent; not bad for a deodorant.

So I got this from Queen Victoria's Building (QVB) on Monday evening. Been meaning to get it, but just haven't had the opportunity to head down .. heh.

About AUD12.20 for 114grams.

Been using it for a few days.. and I actually just left it on the dressing table unwrapped (I hope it doesn't get oxidized or anything!) and the scent from the deodorant bar enveloped my room.  Maybe because it's winter, and the air is cool and still.  It smells really good!

Anyone else used it before? How effective it is compared to the Kiehl's deodorant? Care to share?

Delicacy Beauty & Spa: First Massage Experience

So today I went for a 30 minutes massage at my local salon.

I had been hankering for one in a while, since I visited Strathfield a couple of weeks ago and went about collecting all the flyers and brochures.

In Strathfield, there are a number of korean salons (Strathfield is the most well known KoreaTown in Sydney, at least). However, the thought of having to wait and take a train, and spend extra on the train fare when there already was a Sothys salon in Ashfield Mall did put off those aspirations.

As much as I would like to try out korean massages, I have tried the ones from Sothys. Knowing that they DO work for me, I did not really want to bother with changing to another brand, say PAYOT for instance.

Even if I wanted to do a massage, I should (and would) have done it in Korea at the jimjilbang as it would be less costly to do so. But case in hand, I had not, so I decided not to do it there. The same would go for here as well!

I was also deciding whether to go for the normal TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) type massage, as they abound in Ashfield.

PRESCRIBING
I was trying to decide if to go for it, but since I had to go to the mall, and had ample time at hand (since I was not working today), I decided to go for it. Further, most salons are not as busy in the afternoons, so I know there was a good chance of a vacancy.

So I went into the salon, just right before it turned the next hour, and asked about the different types of massages.

There were two types, being the more higher grade version which used Aromatherapy oil, and the normal massage oil type. I chose the latter, which had the option of 30, and 60 minutes.

I opted for the 30 minutes massage as it was my first for a massage there. Namely, I wanted to trial out the first massage experience before deciding further.

DURATION
Coincidentally, I also had a sore back (not truly sore-sore, but still sore nonetheless), so it was good timing.

I waited for only about five minutes, when the therapist was just finishing up with another client before it came to my turn.

For the massage, I was asked to remove my upper half & inner garments.

HOW WAS IT?
It was pretty good. The masseur, had strong hands.

I rested through it, and came out feeling much well and rested from the massage.

The masseur/therapist did inform me that she could feel the knots. With the blood flowing through now, I guess I won't feel so sleepy as I did as the circulation is much better after the hard massage.

Deodorants @ LUSH

Today is Thursday, the only night well known for the late night shopping (till about 9pm!) in Australia..

On my way home today, I stopped by the LUSH shop near QVB, Sydney and checked out their June Lush Times.

Among the items retailed that caught my eye was the

Aromaco Solid Deodorant retailing for $10.70 per 100g,
Aromaco is our cooling, patchouli scented deodorant block based on an infusion of astringent witch hazel and chamomile vinegar. This has pong-bashing bicarb in it too. Use it on your feet, your armpits and anywhere else you want to keep smelling fresh and lovely. We add plenty of patchouli oil, which is cooling on the skin, is rumoured to sharpen the wits and acts as an insect repellent; not bad for a deodorant

Ingredients:
Witchazel Infusion (Hamamelis virginiana), Propylene Glycol, Sodium Stearate, Chamomile Vinegar (Anthemis nobilis), Sodium Bicarbonate, Patchouli Oil (Pogostemon cablin), Perfume.
100g

T`Eo bar $10.50.
The powerful tea tree one for active armpits. T`Eo bar is a tea tree deodorant, hence the name. If you`re a sporty type who gets sweaty on a regular basis then go for this one. Stick it in a baggie and carry it around with you for regular top ups if need be. Tea tree, lemon and juniper are excellent against invading armies of bacteria.

As with all the Kryztals, the powdered sodium bicarbonate and magnesium carbonate absorb odours and excess perspiration; if you`ve been exercising dab the bar under your arms for reinforcements.

Ingredients:
Sodium Bicarbonate , Cream of Tartar (Tartaric acid) , Apricot Kernel Oil (Prunus armeniaca) , Blue Wax (Specerit Blue C) , Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) , Magnesium Carbonate , Lemon Oil (Citrus limonum) , Juniperberry Oil (Juniperus communis) , Lemongrass Oil (Cymbopogon schoenanthus) , Fresh Grape Juice (Vitis vinifera) , Blue Cornflower Petals (Centaurea cyanus) , *Citral , *Eugenol , *Geraniol , *Citronellol , *Limonene , *Linalool , Perfume *Occurs Naturally in essential oils

I might just go and check it out the next time I am out at QVB.... ^^

Closure: 128 Faubourg @ Pavillion

It is a sad day, but even all good things must come to an end.

I just received by email the circular from the Faubourg One Management.

The 128 Faubourg salon at Pavilion has announced its closure, and will be integrated with the rest of the other 128 Faubourg salons at the other three locations at Bangsar Village II, 1 Utama, and Empire Shopping Gallery.

Good bye to lovely good Sothys memories...... thanks for the beautiful service.

Delicacy Beauty & Spa: My First Visit.

Right, it's been days so this review is due.

It was with much trepidation when I entered the Delicacy salon on Monday. But I was much  pleasantly surprised.

AMBIENCE
The room was not the style ala 128 Faubourg of Malaysia, but rather a more plain brown vanilla version. Although I do wish... but it's just not happening with Sothys in Australia any time soon. :P

I was surprised the centre does not put out advertisements for the "seasonal" facials on the entrance, but apparently they do within the rooms. Perhaps it has to do with marketing & licensing, but I would not know.

FACIALS
I chose the $60 Intense Facial - which includes cleansing, exfoliation, steam, extraction, face, neck, shoulders, hand, head massage, mask, and day cream. It also includes eye waxing(not plucking/tweezing), but no shoulder massage.

I know its the norm in Malaysia to include shoulder massage for most facials, with inclusion of eye brow shaping, but in Australia, that is reserved for the more expensive ones.

THERAPISTS
The salon is staffed majority with therapists of chinese background, some speaking Mandarin, and some Cantonese. The therapist who worked on me was formerly working with another Sothys partner salon in the city, which was a pleasant bit of reassurance.

POST-FACIAL
Like any salon one goes to, there comes the product recommendation at the end of every facial.

As I had combination, yet sensitive to the touch skin, the range I was recommended for use in Winter was:
- Hydra Protective Softening Emulsion
- Immuniscience Fluid (light texture)
- Carte & Confort Light Cream (yes, its spelled Confort!)

SUMMARY
I've tried a number of skincare brands whilst I was still in Malaysia, and out of all the brands, it was my experience at 128 Fauboug which was the most pleasant, and effective.

The fact that this salon utilizes *ONLY* Sothys skincare products is also another contributing happy  factor. I've had experiences with partner salons which weren't too happy, so this is definitely great. So regardless of which facial I chose (even the cheapest one!), they are all the *genuine article*!

The prices for the facials are also fairly affordable. Say, for the same $60 facial treatment I have in the surburb, it would cost at least $100 in the Sydney city area! (which is only 15 minutes by train!). For Malaysians, try not to convert the price. If you're working here, the prices here are not too bad.

There was not much hard-sale, thankfully. And also none of the "this promotion only lasts whilst you are at the shop, and expires once you leave the shop" business. Thankfully. I really think I might have just found my affordable Sothys salon here after all!

Delicacy Beauty & Spa (Sothys Partner Salon)

Right, so I have been in Sydney for about 4 weeks now. Seems like a long time does it not? It seems like a century since I arrived here in early May.

WINTER COMING...
The weather has not been too kind of my skin recently. My skin has gone pretty dry due to the cold weather, and has breaking out for the past two weeks or so. Perhaps this is due to the frequent rain that normally occurs during this period of time, that signals the change of one season to the next.

PRICING STRATEGIES...
So, I've been to a number of malls, and checked out their different pricing strategies. Some charge by way of a free facial for two product purchases (normally around AUD150), and for others, the normal facial purchase. Mind you, the price range of facials at departmental stores like David Jones start from AUD90 to about AUD135!

ASHFIELD MALL...
Located near where I currently live, is the local mall. There is a salon which I have found to showcase only Sothys, and OPI products, so I am pretty pleased as pie. I get really wary if salons subscribe to too many skincare range.

Anyways, the salon, Delicacy Beauty & Spa has a rather nondescript appearance from the outside. As I was at the mall this afternoon with my housemate, JC, I decided to just take the plunge and make an appointment!

It was fortunate that I brought her along, as JC is a person who is particular about customer service, and she was not too keen on the service she observed (just like how I was with the Three service).

However, I'll take her observation into my consideration when I go in for the facial. Will write more after the appointment!

Services at Delicacy Beauty & Spa include:

- Facials from AUD 40 - AUD 160
- Body Treatments from AUD 35- AUD125
- Ladies Waxing from AUD 5 - AUD160
- Men's Waxing from AUD12 - AUD45
- Eye Treatment from AUD38- AUD40
- Tinting & Piercing from AUD12
- Permanent Make up from AUD80- AUD260
- Make Up from AUD40
- Nail Care Services from AUD25.
- Hand & Feet Care from AUD20
- Acrylic Nail from AUD8 - AUD70

For every $1 spent, you will get 1 Bonus Point. Accumulate 2000 bonus points,
get $50 for Free. T&C applies.

Facial Course of 6 times- less 10% discount. Payment for treatment courses are not refundable.

I am now currently residing in Ashfield, a suburb about 15 minutes away by train from the city of Sydney. It's now Autumn, so the weather ranges from cold in the morning, to warm in the afternoons, and back to cold in the evenings. At least for Sydney, that is how it goes.

It seems that Thursday night (predominantly) are the "launch-dates" where trendy/ high end malls like MYERS and DAVID JONES put out their new products.

Meet VOGUE Beauty Editor Sigourney Cantelo in-store on Thursday 13th. 5.30 - 6.30 & 7.00 - 8.00pm. $25 includes Bobbi Brown Gift, Champagne & Canapés and redeemable on product on the day.

Book in for the Pretty Powerful Event which includes Pretty Powerful Makeup Application, Bobbi Brown gift, Pretty Powerful Photo and redeemable on product on the day. $85 to reserve your place. Marks & Spencers: Returning my pair of "bugged" jeans.

Latest Update!
I met up with an old friend of mine, Madeline's at her home recently, and we had a nice chat.

Somehow the conversation turned to Madeline's husband who used to study in United Kingdom, and his experience with Marks & Spencers. According to him, the range of clothing available in Marks & Spencers (during the early 2000s) was targeted to the older folks.

The 35 day return policy was implemented in those days, and customers could return items bought during the 35 day period. Without questions asked. He had once bought attire in winter, and returned it to the store, and the staff would not question him!

Of course, my experience with the Marks & Spencers in Gardens was less than satisfactory. So Marks & Spencers, if your policy states 35 days Return Policy, please tell your staff that IT IS 35 Day Return Policy. Without Questions Asked.

26th April:
It's been a quiet week... Yes, I've been reading a number of reviews on Burts Bees and some other yummy workshops (Body Shop), Benefit, etc.

Have been just busy preparing for my sojourn Down Under. (If you didn't know already), buying my airline tickets from AirAsia (30kgs), Qantas airlines (Perth to Sydney), and received my YHA two-year membership card in the mail today. Cool. Cool.

Travellers get up to more than 10% discount for showing their YHA card at many shops in Australia, okay? And since currently I am not employed (i.e. earning Aussie dollars), every penny saved is a penny earned.

MARKS & SPENCERS
Yesterday, Bell & I spent the whole afternoon at Gardens. Ended up at Marks & Spencers. Chose two pair of pants. For the price I paid, I would have expected the quality of the pants to be better. The pair of pants "did" look nice- that is until I went home and tried it out.

I wore the pair of denim pants, and followed my parents out to IOI Mall. Before I knew, my legs started to itch. It was so bad that I started to stratch. For a pair of denim jeans, (RM99) supposedly on SALE. (or Irresistable Offer, as Marks & Spencers put it) I would have expected better.

I got so really annoyed that the moment I reached home, I took out the pair of pants. Lo & behold, there I beheld three to four different spots of inflamed spots where it was scratching. Folded it really  nicely, and put it back into the green Marks & Spencers plastic bag.  The more I thought about it, the more annoyed I got.

My skin is not sensitive- unless to certain irritants like grass or something similar. But to have a store like Marks & Spencers selling such material? Even the pair of cheap pants (RM90 discounted down to RM30!) I bought from Jusco has yet to cause my skin to itch with such madness before!!

By the time I arrived at Gardens today, it was past six pm, so parking was easy.The assistant who received my case just asked me why did I want to return the pants, so I explained my case.

What did the staff do? They just re-tagged the pair of pants- and I assumed they'd probably just put it back on the shelf??

HALLO?

Did I not mention that I had rashes after trying out the pants for one evening? Did I not say that they should have the pair of denim pants checked?

Anyways, Marks & Spencers has a 35 Day Return Policy. Of which, I decided to just go ahead and return both the pants (since the blue denim jeans left a bad impression, I decided it was better to just return both!) and use the RM200+ instead to spend elsewhere where I might get a pair of jeans which won't cause my feet to break out.

In case you are wondering, the pair of pants were manufactured both in Sri Langka & Bangladesh.

Cultivate Inner Beauty

I was watching this TVB drama on television, 无头东宫 which directly translated from Headless Empress, or Love is Beautiful, as it is so named. It reminded me of  this verse from the Bible that goes like this.

1 Peter 3:1-6 (The Message)
1-4 The same goes for you wives: Be good wives to your husbands, responsive to their needs. There are husbands who, indifferent as they are to any words about God, will be captivated by your life of holy beauty. What matters is not your outer appearance—the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes—but your inner disposition.

4-6 Cultivate inner beauty, the gentle, gracious kind that God delights in.
It led me to thinking, why are women chasing after all the cosmetics, hairstyles and jewelry out there?

Books like "Confessions of a Shopaholic" reveals to us how imminent this is happening in our world.

Females (and males as well) are susceptible to the lure of the media and the promotions that is going on around us. We buy, buy, buy. And end up with a whole lot of stuff (I am a very good example, and I know the outcome of it!).

There should be a balance of knowing where & when to stop.

On my trip to South Korea, the icy snow surrounds helped me disassociate from the outer world ... helping me wean me off some of my "shopaholic" cravings. It felt good.. such a good release...

Hence, this is a reminder to the women (and men) out there: Clothes, Makeup and Jewelry do not define who we are.

Our personality does. So build & cultivate your inner beauty. Your dreams. Your personality. Your spirit. For in the end, that is what counts.

Clarins Club Beaute Member!

Yesterday, was my shopping day. Well, not really but whatever.

After church on Sunday, I had lovely nice Japanese lunch with my cousin Mabel in Taman Desa. We talked a bit about cameras, as my cousin is in interior design, and she knows a bit about cameras.

Later in the day, I headed off to Mid Valley with a mate from my cell group, Kit. I had seen the Clarins promo at Lot 10 the day before, so I decided to check out the different Clarins promotion at Mid Valley.

Well, guess what I found? Turns out that after checking three different Clarins outlets, I should have gone to Isetan Gardens in the first place! LOL.

Currently, Isetan is having a:
Purchase 1 x Facial Shaping Lift (RM208):
GWP:  Facial Shaping Lift (10ml) Travel Size
+ 1 x Golden Clarins Pouch
+ other samples (personalized request from  SA)..
Promotion on still stocks last!
The SA did ask if i wanted some of the other samples, but I was not really interested in them, as I already have a ton of cleansers, toners, moisturizers, scrubs, and what not at home. >.<

For my free sample, she gave me a sample for Face Oil (Blue Orchid). I didn' realise there were samples for Face Oil, so I was pleased. It's pretty pointless to get samples of products that I already other versions of already..
Bought another Multi-Active Starter Kit RM88 = RM208 + RM88 = RM296.
Qualify as member, as minimum purchase is RM250.
So I filled in personal details on the form. Nominated Isetan Gardens as Home Counter. The SA gave me some first time members voucher including
- 50 % for facial voucher
- 500 points extra with purchase voucher
- other free treatment services with product purchase voucher.
Now, why did I join as a Beaute Member in Isetan Gardens?

Reason 1: Collect points for ISETAN member + FREE Parking for RM100 purchase and above!

Reason 2: Mid Valley location nearer to my home!

Oh, and of course, I redeemed for free 3 hours parking at Mid Valley!

Bath Bomb Fizzy's: How To Make Them!

http://www.coastalscents.com

Have you been thinking about making your own bath bombs? Are you concerned about having a top quality recipe and guidance through out your beginning process?

If so, this video is exactly what you are looking for. If for friends or as a business, making bath bombs is so much fun. Give it a try, and see for yourself!

Ingredients: * 1 Cup Baking Soda
* 3/4 Cup Citric Acid
* 2 Tbsp White Kaolin Clay
* 1 Tbsp Grape Seed Oil
* 2 Tsp Poly Sorbate 80
* Vitamin E Oil
* 1 Tsp Fragrance Oil
* 1/4 Tsp Borax Power
* 1/4 Tsp Gel Colorant
* 12 Spritzers Of Alcohol

I know Tammy loves this.. as much as we want to home make bath fizzys, it almost impossible to get any of the ingredients around KL...

Aromatherapy: Types of Materials.

I've heard so much about aroma therapy, due to my frequent "visits" to the salon. Frankly speaking, I am quite interested in it mostly as it seems safe, has that mysterious "aura" about it, and I'd prefer to make my own home skincare & beauty products. This is definitely much cheaper and more efficient as opposed to spending huge chunks of money on commercialised products.

As an anecdote to explain my cost effectiveness in using safe food and normal products,  when I was in Penang for work last year, I had a lovely nice bath at the hotel tub almost every night. One stops by some of the malls to check out the cost of bath salts, to find out that one pack of bath salts cost from RM70 to about a hundred bucks.

So I did some research on the Internet to find out that epsom salts and fresh milk worked just as well! A pack of epsom salts set me back by about RM5 at the local pharmacy, and a carton of fresh milk about RM4 from the supermarket..How much did I just save??

A read through the internet finds that there are two schools of thought in regard to aromatherapy. Some are skeptical on its effectiveness, but nonetheless, I find that even Cert IV in Aromatherapy is available at TAFE.

Regardless lets waste no time as I introduce aromatherapy 101 as per found on the world wide web.

Essential oils are obtained by different methods -- distillation being the most familiar. There are four types of essential oils. The type of method is dependent on the source of the oil and its chemical make-up.

1. Absolutes vs. concretes
2. Expressed
3. Solvent-extracted
4. Steam-distilled

In common terminology, the most common ones as per used in salons, or at home the Essential Oil, and Carrier Oils are used.

Essential Oils
They are normally added to Carrier Oils due to their concentrated nature, as it can provoke an allergic reaction, or irritation. They are precious, almost alive, and should be kept in amber glass bottles.

Carrier oil
They are also known as base oil, or vegetable oil, functioning to carry the essential oil onto the skin. They do not contain any concentrated smell nor aroma, and are derived from vegetable resources. High quality oils sold for culinary are often also suitable for massage use, and cheap!

Both essential and carrier oils should be kept cool, and away from strong light, to stop them from decomposing or oxidizing. Refrigerating oils helps preserve their freshness.

It would be easier to decant just enough carrier oil for normal use, whilst mixing it with a small amount of essential oil.

    Scandle: Body Massage Candles

    Oh my, what a Scandle! For more info, click here.

    Soap Queen TV: How to Make Massage Candles

    "Massage candles are a wonderfully luxurious treat to make for yourself or that special someone. A massage candle is a blend of skin safe waxes, oils and essential oils that melt at a low temperature, perfect for a warm and soothing massage. Makes a great Valentine's gift!

    Please note: there's a typo on the ingredient list - it should read 1 ounce of Cocoa Butter. If you use 4 ounces, your massage candle will be a little softer, but will still work wonderfully.

    Are you a blogger? Please feel free to embed this video on your blog. If you need any help just let us know! info@brambleberry.com"

    For the recipe above:
    1 ounce = 28.3 grams

    Massage Oil Candles: How to Make Them

    I was at the Matrade building today when I saw DnJ Massage Candles. It was the first time I've ever (seen) or heard of them, so decided to find out more..

    Here is a recipe online on how to make Massage Candles from E-How.

    "A massage oil candle is basically a soy candle that has added essential oils and other products, which make it useful for the skin. Massage oil candles have several purposes. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, they can also be used for basic lotions or for a unique massage ingredient. Candles often create a certain atmosphere by offering dim lighting and fragrant smells, and massage candles can actually be used on the body. Massage oil candles can even be introduced into massage therapy practices. Simply ensure that your client is comfortable with this practice prior to their use."
    1. Assemble your ingredients. For a basic soy massage candle purchase the following ingredients: soy wax, candle tin, wick, liquid vegetable oil and essential oil. Choose soy wax specifically because other types of wax can burn the skin.
    2. Choose tins according to the size of candles you would like to make. Then ensure that you've purchased enough soy wax for each tin. For this example we will use 4 ounces of soy wax per candle.
    3.  Measure 4 ounces of the soy wax and approximately 1 ounce of vegetable oil. Almond oil is one option for your oil choice. Then mix these two together.

    4. Place the mixture in the microwave. Prior to heating, ensure that the wax and oil are in a heat safe container. Microwave in 40 second intervals until the combination has melted.

    5. Add a small amount of whatever essential oil you choose. Essential oils are concentrated fragrances, therefore only add a drop or ½ teaspoon to scent you candle. Stir thoroughly.

    6. Allow the mix to cool slightly, then pour into the tin. Place the wick in the center of the candle and allow it to harden.

    7. Consider the possibilities. Massage candles can be saved for personal use and also make wonderful gifts. Homemade labels can be created with different scents and instructions for use.

    8. Burn when you're ready. When you decide to burn your candle, allow the wax to cool faintly (after burned) and scoop it from the candle. It can be applied to the skin as a warming lotion or as a substance for massage. You can burn a portion of the candle or the entire thing for use on the skin.
    Ways to Use Massage Candles
    Skinny Dip Candles provide some aspiring ideas on how to use them.

    I know that in Malaysia (or most Asian countries), most of us are hopeless when it comes to making our own stuff (soaps, candles, waxes), not to mention that we have no idea where to source for the raw materials. It is most likely that for the normal asian customer, they'd just go to to the store and buy it no matter how expensive they are...

      S2 Slimming: My First Trial Experience (Part II)

      Continuing from this post, I was led to the first floor of the three-storey building. I left my belongings in the locker, and was led to the treatment room where I removed my clothing.

      In this outlet, I changed my attire in the room itself, with drapes enclosing the entrance to prevent people walking past from "peeping" inside.

      For the first trial, as per the first trial menu, I was given
      - 1 x Point Navel Care Therapy/or  DMS. (I chose DMS)
      - 1 x Navel Mask (which was technically something smoking they put on your navel)
      - 1 x Detox Wrap
      - 1 x Heat Blanket/ or Presso Therapy (I chose Heat Blanket)

      THE THERAPISTS
      S2 Slimming hires both foreign as well as local staff for body therapists. Most of the therapists have been with the company for a number of years now.

      A trainer comes in from Hong Kong almost every month or two to assess and ensure that therapists' skills are up to date. S2 Slimming has branches in both Malaysia and Hong Kong, and may be expanding further.

      TREATMENT MENU
      S2 Slimming offers both body massages (duh!) and facials. There are about 17 types of treatments available for the purpose of detoxification and fat burning of the body.

      Body massages are limited only to female customers, whereas certain specific outlets will provide facials to men. Please contact the company for more details.

      For example, the ADP (Advance Detoxification Program) as pictured below, it utilizes 5 types of different treatments.

      The  S2 Signature Program utilizes 3 types of treatments.

      MY FEEDBACK:
      The first trial massage was not bad.  As far as I know, even a normal half body massage at some reflexology centres in Mid Valley cost about fifty bucks for half an hour, so this is was a good first trial.

      The therapists have surprisingly strong hands! You just have to get ready for some strong "pinches"!

      PACKAGES
      There will be packages available at promotional rates for first time customers. The Outlet Manager/ Consultant will (undoubtedly) ensure that. ^^

      What I like about the treatments is that clients can utilize the treatment per the time they have available. I.e, if a client only has one hour for that day, the client can utilize a treatment that can be rendered for one hour, instead of say treatments that are counted by the days.

      GOOD NEWS FOR THE BEAUTY REGIME READERS!

       For those interested to check out S2 Slimming, the First Trial price is RM50. (As you know, I did have to pay)..

      HOWEVER if you quote my name (Yong Chea-Yee from Kuchai Lama branch), you'll get a "free boarding pass" for a complimentary free body first trial.

      Well, what else are you waiting for??

      S2 Slimming: My First Trial experience. (Part 1)

      As most of my readers would know, I am a "salon" frequenter..

      I totally love spas, slimming centres and facials.. I can  never resist one if offered. ^^

      Yesterday, I was on my way home when I drove past an S2 Slimming outlet at Kuchai Lama. It seems that a new branch had opened about three weeks ago. I've always wanted to check out their outlet, but as their outlets were always far away (like Puchong, Cheras, Lot 10, Kota Damansara, etc) which was too far away for my liking, I decided not to check them out.

      Until today, that is.

      Being the nosey parker, I decided to check out their FaceBook page, found their contact details, contacted them and decided to drive to their outlet today to check out their branch.

      The S2 Slimming outlet was housed in a 3 storey office lot with lots of food stores nearby (Pappa Rich on one right corner, and a Shabu outlet on the other left end).  The ground floor was the reception area, with the second floor being the treatment areas and the highest floor being the training area.  The reception and walls were painted in solid ocean blue green, the corporate colour for S2 Slimming.

      When I entered the outlet, there was a picture of a lopsided head of Amber Chia with a slim and sexy body modelling for S2 Slimming flyers. Not really a fan of Amber Chia, so neither her face nor body excited me much, but the therapists told me she was very tall, and had very long fingers.... *hmmm*

      Anyways, their first trial promotion for RM50 consists of:
      - 1 x Point Navel Care Therapy/ DMS.
      - 1 x Navel Mask (which was technically something smoking they put on your navel)
      - 1 x Detox Wrap
      - 1 x Heat Blanket/ Presso Therapy.

      Actually, I had received a call from their headquarters for a free trial treatment a couple of months ago (in December last year), but with all things being fair, I don't really enjoy free trials. It may be a gimmick for some, but paying for treatments rendered allows me to enjoy my first trial experience, without the feeling of  obligation to either therapist, or company at the end of session to sign up for any packages that may be proposed.

      True?

      Looking through the list of treatments, they all looked familiar from my previous experience with many slimming salons (*ahem*), except for the Navel Mask which was something I had yet to try. Technically, the process is about the same, whether the treatments were rendered via machine, or human touch.

      As it was a new outlet, consultants were yet to be assigned to the centre for a while. I asked the Customer Office officer to explain more on the treatments, but she informed me that the Outlet Manager had to attend an emergency meeting elsewhere, and asked if I could wait.

      Since it was already almost evening, and I did not feel like spending any more time, I indicated to her that I wanted to start the first trial..

      Asterspring: Calming Aromatherapy Facial Treatment

      Yesterday, I went for another facial at Asterspring Bangsar and utilized my RM198 Service Voucher for a  Calming Aromatherapy Facial. The therapist said my face looked rather stressed out. That seemed true with a huge volcano of a pimple showing on my upper forehead and redness around my eyes..

      Perhaps that was attributed to the fact that last week I was busy on site for 6 days straight, getting in by 9am and finally leaving at 11pm at this major shopping mall in the middle of the city and having to face hundreds of walk in enquiries and customers at that. Woah!

      The lady said my face was breaking out and hence recommended me the Asterspring Calming Aromatherapy Facial Treatment from the Balancing range to calm my skin down.

      The Calming Aromatherapy Facial Treatment is a stabilizing facial treatment that aims relieve skin tension with aromatic plant essences.

      At the end of the session, I was informed that I had an unused RM38 cash voucher, which could be utilized for product purchases (both normal and clearance stocks) from Eve Taylor and Averine range. I was trying to decide between an Averine blusher brush (NP.RM48), and Eve Taylor aromatherapy facial oil No.1 (NP. RM48).

      Since I was not sure which would be better, and I needed a blusher brush more urgently than the face oil, I went for the Averine blusher brush made from pony hair (after discount- RM18), gave the remaining amount of the voucher to my cousin to use, and now she owes me a coffee at Coffee Bean. *Ngek, Ngek, Ngek*.

      Clarins: Multi Active Range samples!

      Clarins Multi-Active range samples

      Recently, there was a nation wide Clarins HP Plus samples giveaway. But due to my "tardy-ness" in collecting samples, by the time I arrived at the Pavilion Parkson outlet, the stocks had all vanished! >.<.

      Actually, I was not too keen on the HP Plus range samples, as I did not find any affinity with the texture of the product. Hence, after a short analysis, the BA gave  me some samples from the Multi-Active range instead!

      *Whee!!!*

      They are now sitting somewhere on the dressing table waiting to be used sometime soon...

      Quantum Science: Scalar Pendant.

      Scalar Pendant with Authencity Card.

      Bought it at the Modern Home Expo recently from Fusion Excel. Retailing for RM300 (normal expo price).

      Does it work? Is it a scam?

      I have yet to know. Just start wearing it for a few days only!

      Ion-Steamers: Do they really work?

       Today, I went for another facial at Asterspring Bangsar and utilized my RM198 Service Voucher for an AromaTherapy Facial.

      Towards the end of my facial, I noticed that the beautician used this contraption which was used to spray "moisture at nano level". The therapist claimed that the technology was imported, and was not available locally, and was also used on "a spray basis with nano molecules to provide ease of absorption and moisturizing effect".

      The fact that the machine (looked rather retro from the earlier days...) lead me to believe that this technology has long been in the market, especially in the beauty line, and has only been introduced to the end-customer recently by Panasonic.

      A sexy woman modeling for Nano Care Ion Steamer.
      Last year, I was at the Panasonic Power of Exhibition Expo, and had the chance to try out the Panasonic Nanocare (Hot & Cold Platinum Steamer).

      It claims that the ion-steam is about 1/200000th that of normal steam, at cell level nano-size and "the platinum steam is nano-sized particle ion steam containing 1-5nm sized particles of platinum, an anti-ageing component. The vibrant steam reaches deep inside the skin's keratin, fortifying the layers with resilience, elasticity and firmness."

      I was of course more than sceptical. Just financially too cash-strapped to plonk down RM1000+ for a ion-steamer at any point of time soon then and now..!
